NSCDC arrests ex-student prefect over lab equipment theft in Jigawa

A former student prefect has been arrested by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State for allegedly attempting to steal laboratory equipment from a school in Dutse.

The spokesman for the NSCDC Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani, confirmed the arrest of the former student in a statement on Thursday.

The suspect, a 22-year-old former student, Aliyu Musa, was apprehended by NSCDC personnel following a complaint from school authorities over recurring theft of laboratory equipment.

Tijjani further explained that the suspect, a former Labour Prefect of the school, was arrested while attempting to cart away five microscopes from the school’s main laboratory.

Preliminary investigations, according to him, revealed that several laboratory items had previously gone missing, including 10 conical flasks, 10 microscopes and other equipment.

The statement noted that the timely intervention of NSCDC operatives prevented further vandalism and theft of vital educational facilities, assuring that the corps would continue to deploy personnel and strengthen surveillance around schools to prevent criminal activities.

He assured of the command’s determination to bring perpetrators to justice, saying that the suspect has been charged with criminal trespass and theft and has been arraigned before a court for prosecution.

The spokesman explained that the command would continue to strengthen security measures to prevent disruptions in the education sector.
