Students gain industry exposure through practical media training

Students of Mass Communication at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) are undergoing hands-on training aimed at strengthening their academic and professional development, as part of renewed efforts to align classroom learning with industry practice.

In a recent initiative, students in the Mass Communication Department were grouped and assigned to visit leading newspaper organisations across Lagos. The exercise is designed to expose them to real-world media operations and bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Participants said the visits offered valuable insights into newsroom structures, news gathering techniques, editing processes and publication routines. Many described the experience as an eye-opener that deepened their understanding of the demands and expectations of the journalism profession.

One student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “School is getting more serious now. The assignments are coming in back-to-back, but it’s helping us stay focused.”
