8 largest oil refineries in the Middle East

The Middle East’s largest oil refineries are facing unprecedented risks as escalating attacks in the region threaten production at some of the world’s most important energy hubs.

From Saudi Arabia to the UAE and Iran, these facilities collectively process millions of barrels of crude daily, making them critical to global oil and gas supply.

According to the ICIS Supply and Demand Database and the American Security Project, these are the eight largest refineries in the Middle East.

Ruwais refinery – United Arab Emirates

The Ruwais Refinery, operated by ADNOC, is a premier, massive oil processing complex located 240 km west of Abu Dhabi city, UAE. It is the fourth-largest single-site refinery worldwide and the largest in the Middle East, with a capacity of over 922,000 barrels per day (bpsd). The facility produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemicals.

Al Zour Refinery

The Al-Zour Refinery, located approximately 90 km south of Kuwait City, is one of the largest oil refineries in the world, with a processing capacity of 615,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Ras Tanura Refinery – Saudi Arabia

Saudi Aramco’s Ras Tanura refinery processes 550,000 bpd. Its units include crude distillation, gas condensate processing, hydrocracking, and catalytic reforming, supplying both domestic and export markets.

SATORP (Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company Refinery) – Saudi Arabia

A joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies, this 460,000barrel-per-dayay refinery began operations in 2014, focusing on full conversion and high-value petrochemicals.

Mina Abdullah Refinery – Kuwait

Established in 1958, the Mina Abdullah Refinery has a capacity of 454,000 barrels per day, refining crude oil into high-value, low-sulphur products like diesel, kerosene, and gasoline.

Persian Gulf Refinery – Iran

The Persian Gulf Star Gas Condensate Refinery, located near Bandar Abbas, Iran, is the world’s largest condensate refinery, processing roughly 360,000 to 420,000 barrels per day (bpd). As a critical “green” refinery, it supplies a major portion of Iran’s gasoline (Euro-5 standard) and has transformed the nation into a potential exporter.

Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Company (YASREF) Refinery – Saudi Arabia

The Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Company (YASREF) is a premier 400,000 barrel-per-day, full-conversion refinery located in Yanbu Industrial City on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast. It is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco (62.5%) and Sinopec (37.5%).

Saudi Aramco Mobil Refinery (SAMREF) – Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Aramco Mobil Refinery Company Ltd. (SAMREF) is a 50:50 joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Mobil Yanbu Refining Company Inc. (a subsidiary of ExxonMobil). Located in Yanbu Industrial City, Saudi Arabia, it is one of the world’s largest complex refineries, processing over 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
