Flooding: Assembly urges rapid assessment in three Sokoto LGAs, seeks immediate solution

The Sokoto State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for a rapid assessment of recent flood disasters, support for victims, and long-term preventive measures in three local government areas of the state.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance jointly moved by Kabiru Dauda (APC–Gada East), Sama’ila Hamisu (APC–Kebbe) and Sirajo Shuni (APC–Dange/Shuni) during plenary on Wednesday.
Seconded by Bashar Jabo (PDP – Tambuwal East), the motion urged the state government and relevant authorities to determine the extent of the damage in the affected communities.
Dauda stated that the assessment would enable the state to provide foodstuffs, shelter, and medical facilities for victims.
“The assembly should call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide all the necessary assistance to the affected communities,” he said.
Dauda further stressed the need for the government to adopt preventive measures against recurrences by controlling erosion and conducting public sensitisation campaigns on safety measures.
He explained that in Gada LGA, properties worth billions of Naira were destroyed in 30 villages, while farmlands and crops, including millet, maize, guinea corn, beans, onions, and peppers, were submerged.
He listed the affected villages, which included Gada town, Tumga Sami, Lungusu, Dutsi Gidan Ishaka, Bigal, Dan Tudu, Dudun Madugu, Dukamaje, Gidan Zomo, Tsagalgale, Kaffe town, Gadabo, Runbukawa, and Gilbadi.
Others were: Tsaro, Kaddi, Gidan Gyado, Tsururu, Gidan Gulbi, Gasaho, Gidan Hashimu, Karangiya, Gidan Adua, Dangindi, Karazube, Karnawa, Basana, Tsitse town, Gidan Tudu and Balakozo.
On his part, Hamisu described the situation in Kebbe LGA as critical and in need of swift intervention to ease the suffering of victims.
“The recent flooding in some villages of Kebbe LGA has caused extensive damage to property, displaced many residents, and destroyed homes and infrastructure,” he said.
Hamisu listed the affected communities, which include Bashi, Bakin Dutsi, Fakku, Girkau, Margai, Kebbe, Umbutu, Ungushi, Kawara, and Kuchi, among others.
Also contributing, Shuni lamented that flooding in Dange/Shuni LGA had rendered many of his constituents homeless following heavy rainfall.
He specifically mentioned the Dambuwa and Shuni communities as needing urgent government attention.
The Speaker, Alhaji Tukur Bala, put the joint motion to a voice vote, and it was unanimously adopted.
In another development, the assembly has directed the contractor handling the 38-kilometre road reconstruction linking villages in Gada LGA to Illela LGA to appear before its committee.
This followed a motion moved by Awaisu Aliyu (APC–Gada West), who decried the contractor’s absence despite having received the project from the previous administration.
Aliyu described the road as riddled with potholes, deep ditches, and worsening gully erosion, making it impassable during the rainy season and posing a danger to lives and livelihoods.
According to him, the road serves as a major route for thousands of residents who rely on it to transport farm produce to markets as well as access healthcare and educational services.
