2026 WCQ: 4 things we learnt as Super Eagles beat Lesotho 2-1

Nigeria defeated Lesotho 2-1 in their penultimate 2026 World Cup qualifying match on Friday evening.

But they took the lead through William Troost-Ekong’s penalty, before Akor Adams netted on his debut.

Lesotho pulled one back after a defensive mix-up saw Hlompho Kalake pull one back.

What are the four things we learnt from the game in Pokolowane?

1. Nwabali is becoming too cocky: Lesotho almost snatched a draw with what was the last kick of the game, after Stanley Nwabali’s casual handling of the ball. He must have been relieved to see the ball trickle narrowly past his post. Let’s not also forget his clumsiness handed Kalake the goal on a platter. After this game, questions will need to be asked about Nwabali, especially since this is not the first time his overconfidence is costing the team.

2. Akor Adams makes a first good impression: Eric Chelle started with the duo of Victor Osimhen and Tolu Arokodare upfront, as he went in search of goals against Lesotho. But with Arokodare not impressing, Chelle introduced Adams who was making his debut. The Sevilla striker showed glimpses of his ability, before producing sublime skill to make it 2-0 off Osimhen’s pass.

3. Jury is out on Chelle: For a while now, most people have been reluctant to criticize Chelle, because they believed the Malian had not taken charge of enough games. But that excuse is no longer valid. The Super Eagles don’t look improved under Chelle. And although he cannot be blamed if the team fails to qualify, he doesn’t look like the coach to take the three-time African champions forward.

4. It’s a must-win against Benin: The last fixture in the qualifying series for Nigeria will be against Benin Republic. As it appears, this would be the match that decides a lot in Group C. If Gernot Rohr completes a vengeful double on the Super Eagles, his team automatically finishes top. A draw could also work for Benin. But a win for Chelle’s men will throw up all manner of possibilities.
