‘Govt has failed’ – Outrage trails Palm Sunday killings in Jos

Nigerians have continued to express grief, anger, and concern following the deadly Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba community, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, which reportedly claimed several lives.

DAILY POST gathered that the attackers stormed the community around 7:30 pm on Sunday, riding on motorcycles and opening fire indiscriminately on residents who were going about their normal activities.

The sudden assault threw the area into panic as residents scrambled for safety.

In response to the incident, hundreds of angry residents took to the streets on Monday morning, defying the state-imposed curfew to protest the killings and demand urgent action from the authorities.

The protesters gathered at the scene of the attack, expressing outrage over the continued loss of lives in the state.

Since news of the attack broke, many Nigerians have taken to social media to mourn the victims and condemn the violence.

Popular Nigerian singer Peter Okoye expressed sorrow over the incident.

In a post shared on his X handle, he wrote:

“My heart is heavy… My prayers are with my people in Jos.”

Similarly, Nigerian gospel singer and songwriter Nathaniel Bassey also reacted to the development, offering prayers and words of hope for the troubled community.

Writing on his X handle, he said: “JOS! You shall not be broken. The forces of evil in our nation shall never prevail. We shall see their end. It is well with you Jos. We see you! Let there be light!”

However, beyond expressions of sympathy, many Nigerians online also directed criticism at Governor Caleb Muftwang over the recurring security challenges in Plateau State.

A media commentator, Big_Sinudo, criticised the governor, saying: “You are supposed to protect lives and property rather than arrive at the scene in a shielded truck. Jokes on you, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang. This is not governance. There is no governance in Plateau State.”

Another user, @auntyPB, lamented the state of governance in the country, writing: “Nigeria as a whole, there is a government but mind you, it’s a FAILED government.”

Similarly, @Jon Jireh accused the government of repeatedly failing to protect citizens.

“The government in Nigeria has failed over and over again in protecting the lives and property of Nigerians. This government must go. TINUBU MUST GO.”

Also reacting, @Adegboyega called for prayers while highlighting the growing number of killings in the state.

“Pray for the people of Jos. The killing of innocent souls has increased. Of the truth, it’s hard to preach peace when there’s no justice. Please stop the killing, they deserve to live.”

Another user, @Frankline Obi, warned that the continued violence could further fuel frustration among young people in the state.

“Plateau youths have endured enough pain. When peace is met with bullets, frustration turns to fire. But more blood won’t heal this wound. Government, protect your people or watch the land burn. Enough! #EndPlateauKillings.”
