APC poses greatest threat to multiparty democracy, says Mark

KANO — The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has described the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the most dangerous threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria.

Mark made the remark during a reception in Kano to welcome former Kano State Governor and political heavyweight, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into the ADC.

He said Kwankwaso’s defection was not merely a political move but a deliberate response to calls from well-meaning Nigerians for opposition leaders to unite and safeguard the country’s democratic space.

“Today marks a defining moment in our democracy,” Mark said. “We stand together, not just as one political party, but as people united to make Nigeria a better and more inclusive nation. Your joining the ADC is a response to the call for all opposition leaders to present a united front against totalitarian tendencies.”

Mark accused the APC of attempting to weaken opposition and concentrate power, warning that such actions threaten to edge the nation toward a one-party state.

“There is no doubt that the APC represents the most dangerous threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria today. Nigerians must have a choice, and anything that limits participation is a direct attack on democracy,” he said.

He further described the ADC as a rallying point for a new national movement built on inclusion, integrity, competence, and progress, emphasizing that the party seeks to empower ordinary Nigerians rather than govern through coercion.

“We call on all Nigerians—regardless of tribe, religion, region, or political history—to join us in shaping a nation where leadership is accountable and every voice matters. Now is the time to rise above ego and embrace unity and sacrifice to rescue our democracy,” Mark said.

The reception was attended by thousands of Kwankwaso’s supporters, highlighting the significance of his move to the ADC and the growing momentum of the opposition coalition.
