Wike distribute fertilizers at subsidized rate to FCT farmers

Farmers from the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, will enjoy 50 percent subsidy on fertilizers.

This was disclosed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike during the distribution of fertilisers to farmers.

On Thursday in Abuja, 550 metric tonnes of fertilisers ranging from conventional NPK, granular urea, NPK gel, to urea gel fertilisers were distributed to farmers by the minister.

The distribution was done by Wike’s Chief of Staff, Chidi Amadi, on behalf of the minister.

“This initiative underscores our firm commitment to food security, agricultural revitalisation, and the welfare of our people. As the FAO has emphasised, food insecurity threatens dignity, stability, and peace.

“In view of this, and in alignment with Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the FCTA has institutionalised this annual support scheme to ease production costs and enhance yields.

“The timing of this exercise is deliberate – coinciding with the farming season – to ensure that farmers can access inputs when they are most needed,” he said.

With the commencement of the distribution, the Minister cautioned against diverting the fertilizers because it must get to the real farmers who will help boost food production and security in the area councils.

Stressing that fertilizer distribution to farmers was not enough, the Minister disclosed that the FCT Administration will collaborated with international bodies to enhance agronomic practices.

He disclosed that the FCTA would collaborate with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Leventis Foundation, and the World Bank for capacity building.
