Policeman killed in Third Mainland Bridge crash

A police officer riding a Bajaj motorcycle was over the weekend rammed into by a Lexus vehicle on the Third Mainland Bridge inward Iyana Oworo, Lagos.
The incident occurred around the Adekunle axis of the bridge, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.
The agency disclosed that the officer died on the spot following the collision, while the driver of the Lexus car with registration number EPE 765 JN reportedly turned himself in at the Adekunle Police Division shortly after the incident.
Upon receiving distress alerts, policemen and officials of LASTMA were reportedly mobilised to the scene to manage traffic, enforce emergency safety measures and commence preliminary response operations.
Traffic cones and cautionary devices, according to LASTMA, were strategically placed around the affected area to prevent secondary collisions, while police operatives initiated documentation and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The agency added that coordinated evacuation and recovery operations were immediately activated to remove the affected vehicles and restore normal traffic flow along the bridge corridor.
Despite the fatal incident, “Traffic movement around the area remained effectively managed due to the intervention and traffic control mechanisms deployed by LASTMA officials”, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said.
Reacting, General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the need for motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations.
Bakare-Oki said: “Motorists must exercise maximum caution, maintain strict adherence to stipulated speed regulations and eschew all forms of reckless driving capable of endangering human lives and public safety.”
He further stated: “Road users must cultivate responsible driving habits, remain conscious of the fragility of human life and comply with extant traffic laws in order to stem the alarming tide of avoidable road fatalities across Lagos State.”
