Obi urges prayer, unity as Lent and Ramadan begin same day

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called for national reflection, unity and compassion as Christians and Muslims in Nigeria begin the 2026 Lenten and Ramadan seasons, saying it is a rare spiritual convergence and an opportunity for national renewal.
In a statement shared on his X page, Obi said the coincidence of the Christian fasting period and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan presents a moment of shared sacrifice and deep reflection for Nigerians facing economic hardship and insecurity.
He described the development as a powerful symbol of collective hope and moral responsibility.
“This rare coincidence is far more than a meeting of dates; it is a powerful symbol of shared sacrifice, reflection, and the possibility of national renewal,” Obi said. noting that both seasons emphasise fasting, prayer and charity.
The former Anambra State governor urged citizens to use the period to seek divine mercy while supporting the vulnerable and promoting peace.
“May our hunger remind us of our neighbours’ suffering, and may our prayers stand as a shield over our nation,” he said, stressing that prayer should be accompanied by acts of charity, forgiveness and self discipline.
Obi further expressed hope that the shared observance would inspire unity across religious and regional lines, describing the season as a chance for moral renewal and national healing at a time many Nigerians continue to struggle with social and economic challenges.
