Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has lauded the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF, for positively projecting the President Bola Tinubu-led administration through its Employees’ Compensation Scheme, ECS.

During a visit by the NSITF Managing Director, Barr. Oluwaseun Faleye and his team in Port Harcourt yesterday. Fubara expressed gratitude to the state government for the scheme’s introduction.

He described the ECS as a valuable gift to Nigerian workers and pledged Rivers State’s commitment to subscribing to the scheme, highlighting its potential to improve workers’ welfare and fight corruption by alleviating their fear of the future if incapacitated.

He said: “The good work of NSITF, through the Employees’ Compensation Scheme, is projecting the federal government in a very positive light. In fact, it is a gift to Nigerian workers and everyone who has keyed into the Scheme.”

Fubara emphasised the scheme’s role in providing for injured or disabled workers and families of deceased employees, calling it a source of hope and security.

Responding to the NSITF MD’s request, the governor agreed to make NSITF compliance a requirement for doing business with the state government, starting with contractors on government projects.

“We are trying in our little ways to improve the fortune of our workers. We will take it as a matter of priority to ensure we subscribe to the Employees’ Compensation Scheme managed by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund”.

The visit included top state officials and aimed to support the scheme’s expansion in Rivers State, potentially making it a leader in the South-South region for ECS adoption.

In his address, the MD NSITF, Faleye, thanked the governor for the warm reception. He explained that his mission in Rivers State was to present cheques to beneficiaries under the ECS and to solicit the governor’s support for the Scheme.

He said: “We are here  in Rivers State to present cheques to some private sector employees who are beneficiaries of the Scheme. We are also here to solicit your support in ensuring that the River State Government subscribes to the Employees’ Compensation Scheme in the bid to improve the State workers’ welfare,” the MD stated.

“River State keying into the scheme will be a trailblazer. Rivers can be the leading light of the ECS in the South-South Region,” he solicited.

The NSITF’s ECS, mandated by law, provides compensation for work-related death, injury, or illness, including medical care, disability benefits, and death benefits to affected employees and their families.

It also benefits employers by reducing legal liabilities and improving workplace safety, contributing to economic productivity and stability.
