Former Kaduna PDP gov candidate Ashiru joins ADC

The Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kaduna State election, Isa Ashiru, has officially resigned his membership of the party.

Ashiru conveyed his decision in a letter dated March 27, addressed to the ward chairman of Kudan Ward in Kudan Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A copy of the letter, which he shared on his verified Facebook page on Monday, indicated that his resignation followed what he described as a period of deep consideration regarding developments within the party.

“I write with a deep sense of humility to formally notify the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, effective from today, the 27th day of March, 2026.

“After careful reflection over the persistent internal leadership crisis, conflicts, rancour and divisions within the party, it has become increasingly difficult for me to continue to participate actively as a member of the party.

“This decision is personal and taken in good faith,” he said.

Shortly after announcing his resignation, Ashiru shared a campaign-style poster bearing the insignia of the African Democratic Congress on his Facebook page, signalling his move to the party.

Ashiru, who holds the traditional title of Sarkin Bai Zazzau, previously represented the Makarfi/Kudan federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

Before his time in the National Assembly, he served two terms in the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

His political journey has seen him contest under different platforms. In 2015, he sought the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress but lost in the primaries to Nasir El-Rufai. He later returned to the PDP ahead of the 2019 elections, where he emerged as the party’s governorship candidate but was defeated by El-Rufai.

Ashiru again flew the PDP flag in the 2023 governorship race but lost to the incumbent governor, Uba Sani of the APC.

In that contest, Sani secured 730,002 votes, narrowly edging Ashiru, who garnered 719,196 votes.
