2027: Kwankwaso’s defection ‘changes the game’ — ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the defection of former Kano State Governor and NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as a major political shift, saying it ‘changes the game’ ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said the move is not just another defection, but part of a broader realignment already taking shape, as political actors and supporters begin to rally around what it described as a credible alternative ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The position was contained in a statement by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who outlined the significance of Kwankwaso’s entry into the party for its growing national push.

“The African Democratic Congress warmly welcomes the decision of former Governor of Kano State and Presidential Candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 General Election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to join our party at this important moment in our country’s journey.

“This decision reflects a growing recognition that Nigeria needs a new direction, and that the time has come for leaders and citizens alike to rally around a credible alternative that puts people first.

“As part of this move, he has encouraged members of his political movement and supporters nationwide to join the ADC, further strengthening this emerging coalition for change.

“In the last 24 hours alone, the ADC’s online registration platform has recorded a significant increase in new members. This is a clear indication that more Nigerians are aligning with a different path forward,” Abdullahi stated.

Several prominent party figures were present to witness the defection, including National Chairman, Senator David Mark; National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; members of the National Working Committee; and leading presidential aspirants such as former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; Mr Peter Obi; and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi. Also in attendance were Senator Liyel Imoke and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

The ADC said their presence reflects a shared commitment among party leaders to build a united front ahead of future political contests.

“Senator Kwankwaso’s decision speaks to what many Nigerians already feel: that the country needs leadership that understands the everyday challenges of its people and is ready to take responsibility for addressing them.

“The ADC is not just a political party. It is a shared commitment to building a country where people can live with dignity, access opportunities, and trust that the system works for them. Change does not happen by chance; it happens when people come together with purpose,” the party said.
