I’ll change UNIZIK’s trajectory, new VC Anyaechie promises

Professor Bond Anyaechie, the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has officially assumed office, pledging to transform the university and steer it toward greater achievements.

Speaking after receiving handover notes from the former Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, Anyaechie emphasized that his focus is on service, not personal interest.

“Our vision is to make UNIZIK the best in Nigeria,” he said. “The work ahead is enormous, but we are prepared, and we need the cooperation of everyone. We aim to turn the university around so that positive news will be coming out of this institution.”

The Vice Chancellor disclosed plans to commission projects within the next four weeks and engage stakeholders, including the alumni association, to support his administration. He also intends to develop a strategic plan, incorporating the visions of his fellow contestants for the university’s benefit.

Addressing staff welfare, Anyaechie highlighted the plight of workers who have been unpaid for six years. “It’s unfair for someone to work without a salary. We will set up a committee to ensure that at least November and December salaries are paid before Christmas. While it may not be possible to clear all arrears immediately, we will do what we can.”

Anyaechie listed immediate priorities, including completing the Vice Chancellor’s Lodge and establishing a medical center at the Okofia Nnewi campus.

“Our mission is to make things better, but peace is essential. I have entered a challenging environment, and our first task is to unite. I assure everyone that I will create an environment where people can work peacefully,” he pledged.
