IGP directs investigation into officers over viral stop-and-search video

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of police officers captured in a viral video allegedly behaving unprofessionally during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.

The directive, issued to the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, mandates a thorough and transparent probe to determine the level of involvement of each officer and ensure appropriate disciplinary measures are taken where necessary.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, following public outrage over the video, which allegedly showed the officers making derogatory ethnic remarks and displaying unprofessional conduct towards a member of the public.

According to the statement, the officers involved; one Assistant Superintendent of Police and three Inspectors, have been identified and taken into custody pending an orderly room trial.

Iniedu said the Inspector-General had directed that the investigation be conducted without bias to establish individual culpability and ensure those found wanting are sanctioned accordingly.

He stressed that the behaviour exhibited in the video does not represent the values or professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

The police spokesperson maintained that the Force would not tolerate ethnic profiling, discriminatory conduct or acts of disrespect towards any citizen, warning that officers who violate the code of conduct would be held accountable.

He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to fair, ethical and professional policing, adding that the institution remains focused on strengthening public confidence and maintaining the trust of the communities it serves.
