Full list: Covenant University emerges top African institution in Times interdisciplinary rankings
Covenant University has secured the top position among African institutions in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings.
The institution placed first in Nigeria, led the continent and claimed the 49th spot worldwide.
Released on Thursday via THE’s website, the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings evaluate how universities advance and support interdisciplinary scientific work.
Interdisciplinary science blends insights, methods, and practices from multiple scientific fields or merges one or more STEM disciplines with selected non-STEM areas such as psychology, education, law, economics, social sciences or medical and health-related fields.
Now in its second edition, the assessment draws on 11 indicators, including research funding, performance outcomes, infrastructure, administrative backing, promotion of interdisciplinary work, publication output, research strength and global reputation.
This year, 911 universities across 94 countries made the list, with Covenant University standing out as the only African school in the global top 50. Egypt’s Cairo University followed at number 69.
Within Nigeria, 18 of the 30 institutions that submitted data earned a place in the rankings. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Landmark University; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology; and the University of Ilorin took second, third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively.
