Elon Musk’s X introduces feature that shows users’ country of origin

Platform X (formerly Twitter) has begun rolling out a limited feature showing the country where its users are based, a long-awaited addition supporters say could help identify accounts spreading propaganda or interfering in foreign affairs.
The functionality, first seen on Friday (November 21, 2025), is not yet available to all users. Those with access can visit an account’s bio, select the date it joined X, and view the country associated with that account.
X head of product Nikita Bier explained in October that the move aims to help users verify content.
The update also allows some users to see additional account details, including the creation date, verification status, country of registration, number of username changes, and the app store country through which the account was connected.
Proponents say the country-based labels could make it easier to detect accounts engaging in misinformation campaigns, unethical engagement farming, or impersonation.
However, critics have expressed concerns about privacy for users who prefer not to reveal their exact location.
In response, X added an option allowing users to display only their continent or broader geographical region instead of a specific country.
