Court fixes May 18 for trial of man for allegedly calling for coup on social media

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, fixed May 18 for the trial of a man, Innocent Chukwuma, who used his social media handle to call the military to overthrow the President Bola Tinubu-led government.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case following an application by the prosecution lawyer, David Kaswe, seeking more time to study the case file.
Kaswe told the court, upon resumption of the hearing, that he had just been briefed on the matter after the case file was transferred to his office by the Department of State Services (DSS).
He sought an adjournment to enable him to study the file, and Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the matter until May 18 and 19 for trial.
Chukwuma was recently arraigned before the court, following his alleged inciting post.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the DSS operatives reportedly trailed him to Oyigbo, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he was arrested.
The charge before Justice Abdulmalik is marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025 between the Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume.
Posting on his “X” handle, “@TheAgroman”, Chukwuma stated that a coup was needed in Nigeria and called on the military to “suspend the Nigerian government”.
He further posted, “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
