4 family members perish in fire incident

KANO—An early morning fire in Kundila, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State, has claimed the lives of four members of the same family.

The spokesperson, Kano fire service, Saminu Yusif, who confirmed the development, said based on preliminary investigation, the incident may have originated from a mosquito coil used in the parlour.

Yusif said the incident claimed the lives of the head of the house, Shodandi (father), his wife, Rafi’a and their two little children, Mardiya Shodandi (3 years old) and Yusira Shodandi, (one and a half year) who were burnt to death.

According to him, “Today being November 19, 2025, Kano State Fire Service, under the leadership of the Director, Sani Anas, the Emergency Response Unit (Control room) received a call for emergency assistance from one of our staff, Abba Datti, reporting a fire at Kundila Layin Baba Impossible Tarauni council about 04:13am.

“Our men from the agency’s headquarters mobilised to the scene of incident, on arrival, they found a building of ground floor engulfed in flames. And the fire affected two bedrooms, one parlour, one toilet and one kitchen.

“Five people reported trapped in the fire, the father, mother and three children. Their names are: Shodandi the father of the children, aged about 43 years old, Rafi’a the house wife, aged about 30 years old, Mardiya Shodandi aged about 3 years old, and Yusira Shodandi, aged about one and a half year.

“Four of them were burnt to death. In addition, a boy named Aminu Shodandi, aged about 12 years old, was rescued alive.

“By the preliminary investigation, we found that, they used mosquito coil at their parlour before sleeping.

“The agency offer its condolences to the families of those who died, and we also urge the public to be careful when handling the fire, more especially during this harmattan season,” Yusif added.
