World Cup: Two Argentina players refuse to shake hands with President Trump

Argentina stars, Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero were seen avoiding a handshake with United States President Donald Trump during the medal ceremony for Argentina World Cup final.

Argentina suffered defeat in the World Cup final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, as Ferran Torres’s goal in extra time resulted in a 1-0 victory for Spain.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had ensured that Trump was prominently featured during the medal ceremony, with the US President also responsible for presenting the World Cup trophy to Spain’s captain, Rodri.

However, during the silver medal ceremony for Argentina, Martinez chose not to extend his hand to either Infantino or Trump, who presented the Manchester United centre-back with his medal.

Romero, on the other hand, did shake hands with Infantino when receiving his World Cup medal, but he walked past Trump and instead greeted both Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Meanwhile, Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, who led the team to triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and secured two Copa America titles, was visibly emotional during his post-match press conference.
