White House confirms Trump will attend World Cup final

The White House has confirmed that United States President Donald Trump will attend Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the president’s attendance during a press briefing on Thursday, making it official that Trump will be present for the tournament’s showpiece match.

“We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the president looks forward to attending,” Leavitt told reporters, according to Reuters.

She added that Trump’s attendance would cap what she described as “the most watched, most secure, and most successful World Cup in American history.”

Leavitt said she did not know whether the president would be supporting Argentina or Spain in the final but joked that reporters should ask him directly.

“I’m sure he’ll have a fun answer for you,” she said.

The White House also confirmed that Trump will attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City on Friday ahead of Sunday’s final.

The highly anticipated showdown will see defending champions Argentina, inspired by Lionel Messi, take on Spain after both sides emerged victorious in their World Cup semi-finals.

Argentina booked their place in the final with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England, while Spain defeated France 2-0 to reach the tournament’s biggest match.

Trump’s attendance adds another layer of global attention to the final, which is expected to attract millions of viewers worldwide as Argentina chase a fourth FIFA World Cup title and Spain seek to reclaim football’s biggest prize.
