WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons rout Egypt to reach quarter-finals

Defending champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of following a comprehensive 6-2 victory over the Cleopatras of Egypt.

Justine Madugu’s side finished second in Group C behind the Scorchers of Malawi.

Egypt moved the ball around with confidence in the opening minutes, but it was the Super Falcons who took the lead in the 21st minute through Asisat Oshoala.

Oshoala fired the ball home from the penalty spot after the defending champions were awarded a penalty for a handball inside the area.

Substitute, Monday Gift doubled Nigeria’s lead four minutes before the break, with Rinsola Babajide providing the assist.

Egypt, however, pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Nadine Ghazi late in the first half.

The Super Falcons took total control of the game after the break with substitute Uchenna Kanu slotting home from inside the box following an assist from Babajide.

Christy Ucheibe scored the West Africans fourth goal of the evening from the spot in the 81 minute.

Ghazy reduced the deficit for Egypt firing home from outside the box.

The Super Falcons were awarded another penalty late on after Michelle Alozie was fouled inside the box . It was calmly converted was converted by captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

Substitute Joy Omewa netted Nigeria’s third of the game deep into stoppage time.

The Super Falcons will battle the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon for a place in the last four on Sunday.
