Two killed, four injured in shooting at Toronto street festival

At least two people were killed and four others injured after gunfire erupted during a crowded street festival in Toronto, Canada, authorities have confirmed.

The shooting occurred around 8:12 p.m. local time on St. Clair Avenue, where thousands of people had gathered for the annual Salsa on St. Clair festival. 

Police responded to reports of an active shooter and discovered six victims with gunshot wounds.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the four others were taken to hospital for treatment.

Speaking at a briefing, Toronto Deputy Police Chief Francisco Barredo said preliminary investigations indicate that the violence resulted from an exchange of gunfire between two individuals at the festival.

He disclosed that officers recovered two firearms from the scene, adding that no arrests had been made as of the latest update.

Barredo described the aftermath as “very chaotic,” noting that an estimated 13,000 people were attending the event when the shooting occurred.

Police said investigators were processing three separate crime scenes connected to the incident and advised members of the public to stay away from the area while investigations continue.

Authorities also appealed to witnesses and anyone with photographs, videos or other relevant information to come forward to assist the investigation.

Reacting to the tragedy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was horrified by the attack and extended his prayers and condolences to the victims and their families.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also condemned the incident, describing it as a “senseless act of violence” and calling for those responsible to be swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.

Security remained heightened on St. Clair Avenue in the aftermath of the shooting.

The Salsa on St. Clair festival, held from July 11 to 12, is an annual celebration of Latin culture featuring live music and dance performances. This year’s event marked its 22nd edition.
