Thousands join Palm Sunday procession in Ilorin

Thousands of Christians in Ilorin, Kwara State, joined millions around the world on Sunday in a vibrant Palm Sunday procession, commemorating the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem and marking the start of Holy Week.

Worshippers from various denominations gathered at Saint Barnabas Cathedral, Sabo-Oke, before marching through major city roads including Murtala Way, Maraba, Amilegbe, Ipata, Opo-Malu, Emir’s Road, Taiwo Isale, Unity, and the Post Office area. A second group, starting from First Baptist Church, Surulere, merged with the main procession at Unity Road. The event concluded with a closing benediction at the cathedral.

Addressing participants, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kwara State chapter, Right Reverend Sunday Adewole, encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in faith and service, while calling on government and security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property.

“Our faith must guide us in our daily lives, especially during these challenging times,” Adewole said, highlighting concerns over economic pressures such as high fuel costs and erratic electricity supply.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Religious Matters, Reverend Timothy Oluwagbemiga Akangbe, urged worshippers to pray for the progress of the state and the nation, emphasizing love, humility, and service as guiding principles for Holy Week.

Former CAN Secretary, Pa Olusola Ajolore, called for proactive measures against insecurity, urging efficient use of security resources, attention to unemployment, and a review of the nation’s constitution to reflect contemporary realities.

Senior Prophet Segun Korode of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church reminded Christians to glorify God for His faithfulness and emulate the humility of Jesus Christ, who brings salvation to mankind.

Participants expressed hope that their prayers would lead to peace, security, and socio-economic progress in Kwara State and Nigeria at large, as the Palm Sunday celebration ushers in Passion Week, including Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday.
