Suspected cultists attack mouners, hijack corpse at burial ceremony in Edo, 14 arrested

The Edo State Police Command said 14 suspected cultists allegedly hijacked a corpse at a burial ceremony in the state.

DAILY POST reports that the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this on Monday, January 26, 2026, in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin City.

Ikoedem said the incident took place in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of the state.

She alleged that the suspects also attacked two commercial motorcyclists and inflicted grievous injuries on some persons.

She said the suspects have been arrested, while the injured victims were taken to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

The Command’s spokesperson gave the names of the suspects to include Promise Oyido, Jude Usidebhosoh, Mutairu Alhaji, Samson Usidehofo, Collins Esaigbe, Osemudiamen Iyere, Christian Akhare, and Evidence Osamare.

Others are Joshua Augustine, Kelvin Micheal, Goddey Anuka, Blessed Ohue, Joseph Okhun, and Charles Okhare.

While stating that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, she added that following swift police intervention, normalcy has been restored to the area.

Ikoedem said eleven cutlasses, one dagger knife, and one shovel were recovered from the suspects.
