Reactions trail FIFA World Cup countdown post
By Enitan Abdultawab
A countdown message shared by FIFA ahead of the World Cup has sparked a storm of reactions on social media, with users voicing sharply divided opinions about the tournament and its host nations.
The post, marking 100 days to kickoff, was designed to build anticipation for the global showpiece set to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Instead, it quickly drew pointed responses from football fans and critics alike.
One user, @Maxis_arena, accused the governing body of double standards, referencing Russia’s suspension from international football and arguing that similar scrutiny was not being applied to current developments involving the United States and security concerns in another host nation.
He wrote: “Y’all are hypocrites. Russia has been banned for less but one nation is at war while the other is being run by drug cartels and y’all don’t give a flying sh!t about it.”
Another commenter, @ferizandra, posted: “Russia banned from football for attacking Ukraine… USA, host of the World Cup, attacks Iran and kills its Supreme Leader… What will FIFA do…?
”
Questions over safety and political neutrality also surfaced.
@TheBlackPioneer stated: “In America? So there’s not a single care in the world about the safety of people huh.
Politics are involved and we know FIFA not to involve themselves with such, but here we are..are you guys scared of the US? Cause people are going to die and their blood will be in your hands!”
While some expressed anger, others mixed excitement with concern. @ojhayford wrote: “100 days to the World Cup!!! I certainly can’t wait. But honestly the real truth and question to be asked is, is USA totally safe for a World Cup right now?”
Broader criticism about the tournament’s organisation was also highlighted. @biodaxboy commented: “Honestly, there’s been too much negativity around this year’s edition, particularly the host nation’s safety and restrictions of diversity, ticket pricing issues as well as players’ readiness, their fitness levels after so much volume of games played recently.”
In another reaction, @nekekings1 took a more sarcastic tone, referencing tensions involving participating and host countries, while still stating anticipation for the tournament’s kickoff.
He wrote, “The host nation is invading one of the participating countries, the other host nation is being overrun by a cartel. Can’t wait for the World Cup to start.”
Meanwhile, @KrishnaAnand_ expressed doubt about the event proceeding as planned, writing: “There’s no way this World Cup happens. It’s unsafe in the US for many fans and players and the regime is rather unstable.”
Given recent developments, the scrutiny surrounding the tournament’s staging seems unlikely to go away anytime soon.
