Police arrest another suspect over killing of UNIJOS graduate Ibrahim Mbaya

Jos — The Plateau State Police Command has arrested another suspect in connection with the alleged mob killing of University of Jos graduate, Ibrahim Mbaya, as investigations into the incident continue.

The Command described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in its ongoing investigation into the death of Mbaya, whose alleged torture by a mob following accusations of theft sparked widespread public outrage.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Jos.

According to the statement, detectives acting on credible intelligence arrested Yusuf Christopher Beskeni, 24, over his alleged involvement in the incident.

The police said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly participated in the assault on the deceased.

According to the statement, the suspect is alleged to have helped tie Mbaya to a pole while he was assaulted by members of the mob.

“The suspect allegedly played an active role in the unlawful assault on the deceased. He is specifically alleged to have participated in tying the deceased to a pole while he was subjected to severe assault by members of the mob,” the statement said.

The Command said the suspect is in custody and assisting with the investigation, while efforts have been intensified to apprehend other suspects still at large.

The Acting Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, DCP Usman Sheikh Adamu, assured the family of the deceased and residents of the state that the Command remains committed to ensuring that everyone found culpable is brought to justice.

He said no effort would be spared in investigating the case and prosecuting those found responsible in accordance with the law.

The police also appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist ongoing investigations by reporting to the nearest police formation.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of citizens and ensuring justice is served.

Mbaya, popularly known as “Ibee,” died on July 27 after he was allegedly assaulted by a mob over accusations of stealing a mobile phone at an off-campus residence in Jos.

The incident triggered widespread condemnation and renewed calls for an end to mob justice.

With the latest arrest, the number of suspects in police custody has risen to five, while investigations and efforts to apprehend other fleeing suspects continue.
