Plateau Killings: How long shall this continue?’ — Jang demands action

JOS — Former Plateau State Governor and Senator representing Plateau North, Jonah Jang, has strongly condemned the gunmen attack on Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, which claimed at least 28 lives on Palm Sunday.

The attack, which occurred in the heart of Jos on a day meant for peace and reflection, has left residents in shock and mourning. Several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Clinton Garuba, Jang described the perpetrators as “agents of darkness” bent on plunging the state into fear and regression.

“For how long shall these killings continue?” the statement queried. “These are not just statistics; they are 28 individuals full of promise, dreams, and potential whose lives were violently cut short.”

Jang extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. He also called for unity among the people of Plateau State, urging them not to succumb to fear.

The senator demanded more proactive action from security agencies, stressing that the brazen nature of the attack within the state capital highlights the urgent need for improved intelligence gathering and a shift from reactive to preventive strategies.

He recalled that his earlier advocacy for state police as governor was met with criticism, noting that recent developments underscore its importance.

Jang, however, commended President Bola Tinubu for steps taken toward addressing the issue of state policing, urging him to fast-track the process to empower governors to effectively tackle insecurity.

He also appealed to youths to remain calm and avoid reprisals, despite the grief and anger, while calling on security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.

“The terrorists appear to be evolving new tactics, and the government must rejig its operational strategy to counter them,” he said, adding that justice must not only be done but seen to be done as a deterrent.

Jang further called for heightened surveillance across communities and a collective resolve to protect lives and preserve social cohesion in the state.
