Plateau Govt cracks down on illegal mining, seizes equipment in Jos

Jos, Plateau State — The Plateau State Government has stepped up efforts to curb illegal mining, recovering equipment and issuing stern warnings to offenders during a recent joint operation.

Peter Gwom, Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, expressed concern over the widespread land degradation caused by illegal mining. Represented by Samuel Jaryum, Director of Exploration and Gemological Services, he highlighted ongoing challenges despite Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration’s commitment to protecting lives and promoting prosperity.

“The ministry remains worried about the rising number of deaths linked to illegal mining operations, as well as the increasing population of out-of-school children in mining-prone areas within the state capital,” he said.

The joint team, working with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, visited several sites including Zawan, Rayfield Resort, Lamingo Dam, and Yingi Reserved areas, where illegal mining was rampant. Recovered items included generator pumping machines, pickaxes, and other mining tools.

The team condemned mining inside residential areas and particularly near Lamingo Dam, citing severe environmental and safety risks, and urged the public to desist from such practices immediately.

The ministry called on anyone interested in mining to formalise operations, register with the ministry, obtain the necessary licence, and comply with global best practices.
