OPC disowns suspects arrested in Adelabu family kidnap case

LAGOS – The Oodua People’s Congress has distanced itself from individuals arrested in connection with the abduction of the sister and twin nephews of former Power Minister, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The clarification followed claims by one of the suspects alleging affiliation with the group.

In a statement issued by its President, Mr. Wasiu Afolabi, the organisation said it had no connection with the arrested individuals and rejected any attempt to link it with criminal activities.

Afolabi said the group regularly supports law enforcement agencies in addressing security challenges and has consistently provided community-based security assistance where necessary.

He, however, stressed that the organisation cannot be associated with criminal conduct under any circumstances.

According to him, individuals arrested for crimes in the South-West may falsely claim affiliation with the organisation in an attempt to mislead authorities or seek leniency.

He described such claims as impersonation and urged security agencies to treat them as false representations.

Afolabi reiterated that the organisation has strict internal standards and does not tolerate criminal behaviour among its members.

He also stated that members are guided by strict codes of conduct and are expected to uphold discipline and integrity in their communities.

The group further expressed readiness to support government efforts in tackling insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes.

It noted that it has the capacity and structure to contribute meaningfully to community security but said it is yet to be formally engaged by South-West state governments.

Afolabi added that the organisation remains committed to lawful engagement and cooperation with security agencies in the fight against crime.
