Meta has confirmed that the official Obama White House Instagram account was hacked, leading to the publication of unauthorised posts and stories before the platform regained control of the page and removed the content.

The security breach came to light on Sunday when the account, @obamawhitehouse, began sharing unusual content, including an AI-generated image and a caption claiming that “the White House is under Shiites’ control.”

According to reports, the hackers also posted a series of unauthorised Instagram Stories during the incident, drawing attention from followers before the content was taken down.

Meta said the account has since been secured and all unauthorised posts deleted. The company, however, did not disclose how the attackers gained access to the page.

The affected account is the official archival page of the Obama White House and is separate from former President Barack Obama’s personal Instagram account.

Its last verified post was published on January 20, 2017, the day of Donald Trump’s first inauguration.

Meta said investigations into the breach are ongoing, while the identities of those responsible remain unknown.
