No attack on Bishop Kukah’s residence, Sokoto Cathedral – Army

The Nigerian Army has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging an armed attack on the residence of Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Nigerian Army, through the 8 Division Nigerian Army and Operation FANSAN YAMMA, said the viral Facebook post claiming that gunmen attacked the residence of Matthew Kukah, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral was entirely fabricated.

The Army said investigations confirmed that no such incident occurred anywhere in the state.

“We categorically debunk these unfounded claims as there was no attack on the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah or the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral,” the statement said.

According to the military, the safety and security of the cleric and the cathedral remain fully guaranteed, stressing that Bishop Kukah is currently carrying out his Easter engagements without any disruption.

The Army further assured residents that it remains vigilant and committed to protecting lives and property across its area of responsibility.

“The Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents in Sokoto State,” the statement added.

It also noted that robust security measures had been put in place to ensure peaceful Easter celebrations across the state.

The statement was signed by Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army, on behalf of the command.
