NDC vows to resist one-party system

Yenagoa—National Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Senator Moses Cleopas, has said the party would resist any attempt to steer the country toward a one-party system, stating that the NDC was poised to change the dynamics of Nigerian politics.

Cleopas made the disclosure, yesterday, at the party secretariat in Yenagoa, while receiving chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with their supporters, who formally defected to the NDC.

He emphasised that the NDC is focused on offering service to the people, marking a departure from the country’s current political reality.

Cleopas predicted an imminent political revolution, where the power to elect leaders would reside with the people rather than a select few.

He said: “In the name of politics, we shouldn’t join those that caused us pain in the past; it shouldn’t be a do-or-die affair.

“There are several elections in the state that we stood with the people against oppression from federal might and we won. We will replicate the same all over the country.”

The national chairman praised the party’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, noting his record as a former governor who stood firm to ensure electoral victories despite opposition.

“In NDC, we are politicians with convictions. We stand for fairness and equity. We don’t have to join what everybody is doing, because that doesn’t make it right. We need people like our leader who can speak truth to power,” he added.

Describing the NDC as a pan-Nigerian movement, Cleopas said the party was for the low and the highly placed, the poor and the rich, the weak and the strong, “So that the most favored won’t oppress others.”
In his remarks, a stalwart of the APC and leader of a political bloc in Ekeremor Local Government Area, Selekebina Saboh, described the defection as a new dawn for the political landscape of both the state and the country.

Commending the party’s national leader for the bold steps taken to bring about desired change in the political narrative, said: “I am defecting today with over 1,200 supporters from my area, while more will still join us soon. I am here to strengthen the party, so we can win elections at different levels in the country; we have the majority.”

Saboh added that having served diligently in other parties, he and his supporters were ready to replicate the same commitment within the NDC.

“We will ensure that from the grassroots across the country, the people will feel the breath of fresh air. When campaigns start, the people will know that we are here to win elections,” he stated.
