Lagos Govt shuts i-Fitness facility in Lekki over pollution

Lagos State Government has sealed a branch of i-Fitness Gym located around Jakande Roundabout in the Lekki Peninsula area of Eti-Osa Local Government Area over alleged environmental violations involving the discharge of untreated sewage into public drainage channels.

The enforcement action was carried out on Tuesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), according to information shared by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on his official X account.

The agency alleged that the fitness facility channelled raw sewage into public drains through a pipe, an act it said constituted environmental pollution, public nuisance and a threat to public health.

In a statement, the LSWMO said the facility was sealed following the discovery of the alleged infraction during its monitoring and enforcement activities.

“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday, 23rd June, 2026, sealed off i-Fitness, Jakande Roundabout, Lekki Peninsula, Eti-Osa, Lagos, over indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into public drains via pipe, thereby causing public nuisance and environmental pollution as well as endangering human health,” the statement said.

The agency noted that the discharge of untreated wastewater into public drainage systems violates environmental regulations and poses significant health and sanitation risks to residents.

It added that the enforcement measure was necessary to ensure compliance with existing wastewater management laws and to deter similar practices by other organisations.

The state government reiterated its commitment to maintaining environmental standards across Lagos and warned that individuals and businesses found violating environmental laws would face appropriate sanctions.

According to the statement, “Lagos State Government reiterates the need for the public to adhere strictly to proper wastewater management practices, noting that any individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations will be meted with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws.”

Authorities also urged residents, commercial establishments and corporate organisations to adopt responsible wastewater disposal methods in order to safeguard public health and protect the environment.
