KEDCO workers suspend strike after reaching agreement with management

Workers of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) have suspended their strike following an agreement reached between the company’s management and labour unions.
The suspension of the industrial action followed a meeting held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the Kano State Ministry of Power, involving KEDCO and the electricity workers’ unions namely the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE).
Under the agreement, KEDCO committed to paying outstanding arrears of the 13th-month salary for 2019, estimated at about N150 million.
The company also pledged to pay the 2025 13th-month salary bonus in February 2026, alongside workers’ monthly salaries.
The parties further agreed that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat, leaders of the electricity workers’ unions, and KEDCO’s management would reconvene to deliberate on other unresolved issues, with the aim of reaching a lasting resolution.
The agreement also guarantees that no worker will be victimised or sanctioned for participating in the strike following its suspension.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by the Managing Director of KEDCO, Dr Abubakar S. Jimeta, representatives of the labour unions, and government officials who served as witnesses.
