Kebbi Chief of Staff urges NASS to make media fourth arm of government

The Chief of Staff to the Kebbi State Governor, Barr. Attahiru Maccido, has called on the National Assembly to enact a law giving constitutional recognition to the media as the fourth arm of government.

Maccido made the call on Monday at a public lecture organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Kebbi State chapter, in Birnin Kebbi.

He said the media’s role in sustaining democratic governance in Nigeria remains critical, noting that journalists were instrumental during the struggle for the restoration of democracy in the military era.

“Many journalists paid the supreme price for the restoration of democracy in this country. Therefore, the media should be made an arm of government constitutionally, not just the fourth estate of the realm,” he said.

Maccido also acknowledged the challenges journalists face in carrying out their duties.

Representing Governor Nasir Idris, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed Birnin-Kebbi, said journalists continue to contribute to democratic development in the state and the country.

He added that the state government will maintain its engagement with the media.
