Jos tanker crash claims two lives

Jos – A large-scale tragedy was averted on December 28, 2025, following a road traffic crash involving a laden petroleum tanker and five other vehicles between St. Louis College and the Polo Field Club Roundabout in Jos, Plateau State.

The crash, which occurred around 6:49 p.m., was reported to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), whose personnel immediately mobilised for rescue operations.

A total of 18 persons were involved in the incident. Two adult males lost their lives on the spot, while 16 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) for medical attention.

The bodies of the deceased were deposited at BUTH.

Eyewitnesses said the tanker had a brake failure shortly after the Plateau State Specialist Hospital Roundabout and descended uncontrollably before crashing into several vehicles.

To prevent a possible fire outbreak, sister security and emergency agencies swiftly cordoned off the area, diverted traffic, and prevented looting.

Fortunately, there was no spillage of the petroleum product, significantly reducing the risk of conflagration.

Agencies on the ground included the FRSC, Nigeria Police, NSCDC, Operation Rainbow, Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Nigerian Army, Federal Fire Service, Vehicle Inspection Officers, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

The tanker’s content was safely transloaded, wreckages cleared and traffic fully restored by midnight.

In a statement, FRSC Public Education Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Peter Longsan, said Sector Commander Olajide Mogaji commended the effective inter-agency collaboration and community cooperation.

He urged motorists to report emergencies via 122 and remain cautious and responsible on the roads, especially into the New Year.
