Jos Attacks: Senate directs IGP to commence investigation

The Senate has condemned in very strong terms the gruesome and barbaric attack on innocent citizens in Rukuba village of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Senate has directed the Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, to, as a matter of urgency, commence a holistic investigation into the attacks, with a view to arresting and prosecuting the culprits and ensuring they face the full wrath of the law.

The Upper Chamber also resolved to send a high-power delegation led by the President of the Senate to the crisis areas to condole with the Plateau people and also the victims.

The Senate urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to direct its agencies to supply relief materials to the area, just as a  minute silence was observed in honour of the victims of the crisis.

Resolutions of the Senate yesterday were  sequel to a motion titled, “Urgent need to upscale security operations in Kanam and Jos North Local Government areas of Plateau State and moved by Senator Diket Plang, APC, Plateau Central and seconded  by Senator Simon Lalong, APC, Plateau South  and Senator Pam Dachungyan, APC-Plateau North.

Recall  that the Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau North Senatorial District was attacked by gunmen on March 2026 killing scores of residents.

In his presentation,  Senator Plang noted that Plateau was known as the home of peace and tourism but has gradually lost its natural and atmospheric character due to incessant crisis and attacks ‘by marauding criminals in the last few decades.

“Though efforts were made by both” the federal and state governments in restoring peace, the relative peace being enjoyed has also been recently shattered.

“This is with the dastardly attack that happened in Kanam Local Government Area in Plateau Central Senatorial District in early March.

“And the attack in the Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau North Senatorial District on Sunday, March 29.

“This was while many were enjoying their Sunday evenings, and many others were returning from evening services where  scores were killed and many injured.

“This recent attack appears to be a well-coordinated and well-orchestrated attack targeting defenseless citizens in a densely populated area bubbling with social, economic and religious activities.

“The crisis in Plateau has become very complex because of its ethnic and religious coloration, with recent attacks having no particular target or reason but pointing towards an act of terrorism.

“Worried that the incessant crisis on the Plateau is eroding the state and its peaceful citizens, the ambiance of peace and harmony that was once the hallmark of the state”.

The prayers of the motion was adopted by the senators after a voice vote by the Deputy Senate President. Barau Jibrin, APC,  Kano North.
