African nations have long struggled to establish themselves among football’s elite at the FIFA World Cup, often finding it difficult to progress beyond the group stage.
At Italia ’90, Cameroon became the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals, while Ghana came agonisingly close to making history at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Black Stars were denied a place in the semi-finals after Uruguay striker Luis Suarez handled the ball on the goal line in the dying moments of extra time before Ghana lost on penalties.
Africa’s greatest World Cup achievement, however, came at Qatar 2022 when Morocco became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals. The Atlas Lions defeated Belgium, Spain and Portugal before eventually losing to France in the last four and Croatia in the third-place match.
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, here is a look at the African countries with the most wins in World Cup history.
Nigeria — 6 wins
Nigeria holds the record for the most World Cup match victories by an African nation, with six wins from six appearances.
The Super Eagles announced themselves on the global stage at USA 1994, defeating Bulgaria 3-0 and Greece 2-0 before reaching the Round of 16. They repeated the feat at France 1998, beating Spain 3-2 in one of the tournament’s biggest upsets and also defeating Bulgaria. Nigeria’s most recent World Cup win came against Iceland at Russia 2018, where they again reached the round of 16.
Cameroon — 5 wins
Cameroon became the first African nation to reach the World Cup quarter-finals at Italia 1990. The Indomitable Lions stunned defending champions Argentina 1-0 in the tournament opener and later defeated Romania and Colombia.
Cameroon added further victories against Saudi Arabia in 2002 and Brazil in 2022.
Morocco — 5 wins
Morocco produced Africa’s greatest-ever World Cup campaign at Qatar 2022. The Atlas Lions defeated Belgium 2-0, Canada 2-1, Spain on penalties after a goalless draw, and Portugal 1-0 to become the first African side to reach the semi-finals.
Their first World Cup victory came against Portugal at Mexico 1986, when they also became the first African nation to top a World Cup group.
Ghana — 5 wins
Ghana reached the Round of 16 on their World Cup debut in Germany 2006 after beating the Czech Republic and the United States.
Four years later in South Africa, they defeated Serbia and the United States before reaching the quarter-finals. The Black Stars came within a penalty kick of becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals before losing to Uruguay on penalties following Luis Suarez’s infamous goal-line handball.
Their most recent win was a 3-2 victory over South Korea at 2022 World Cup.
Senegal — 5 wins
Senegal enjoyed one of the most remarkable World Cup debuts in history at Korea/Japan 2002. The Teranga Lions shocked defending champions France 1-0 in the opening match and later defeated Sweden in the Round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals.
Senegal added victories over Poland in 2018, then Qatar and Ecuador during their run to the knockout stage at Qatar 2022.
Algeria — 3 wins
Algeria recorded Africa’s first victory over a European team at a World Cup when they stunned West Germany 2-1 at Spain 1982. The Desert Foxes also defeated Chile at the same tournament but were controversially eliminated following the infamous “Disgrace of Gijón.”
Algeria’s third World Cup win came against South Korea in 2014 as they reached the Round of 16 for the first time.
Tunisia — 3 wins
Tunisia became the first African nation to win a World Cup match when they defeated Mexico 3-1 at Argentina 1978.
Decades later, they beat Panama 2-1 at Russia 2018 before claiming one of Africa’s most memorable results in Qatar 2022, defeating reigning world champions France 1-0.
Ivory Coast — 3 wins
Despite featuring a golden generation led by Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré and Gervinho, Ivory Coast never progressed beyond the group stage.
Their three World Cup victories came against Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, North Korea in 2010 and Japan in 2014.
South Africa — 2 wins
South Africa’s first World Cup victory came at France 1998 when they defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1. Their second arrived on home soil at the 2010 World Cup, where Bafana Bafana beat France 2-1 in a memorable farewell despite failing to advance from the group stage.
