Former NUJ Chairman emerges Nasarawa NDC Chairman

Hon. Dogo Shammah, a former chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nasarawa State Council, has been elected Chairman of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Nasarawa State.

Shammah emerged alongside a 35-member executive council during the party’s first state congress held at Mosmera Hotel, Lafia, on Monday.

Other members of the new executive include Dajuma Joseph as Publicity Secretary, Habila Yusuf as Assistant Publicity Secretary, and Anthony Jude as State Organising Secretary.

The congress also formally dissolved the interim executive that had been running the party in an acting capacity over the past two months, replacing it with elected leadership in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Announcing the new leadership, the representative of the party’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and National Organising Secretary, Umar Farouk Auta, said the NDC was positioning itself as a strong political force in Nasarawa State.

Auta said the party was witnessing growing support, noting that politicians from other parties were joining in significant numbers.

He acknowledged internal challenges within political parties but maintained that the NDC had established internal mechanisms to manage disputes.

He also stated that the party’s constitution discourages members from taking internal disputes to court, warning that such actions could attract sanctions.

The new leadership was urged to remain focused, disciplined, and people-oriented in line with the party’s objectives.

In his acceptance speech, Shammah described the NDC as a youth-driven and reform-oriented political platform committed to inclusivity and national development.

He said the party stands for equal rights and justice, free-market democratic governance, human rights, freedom of speech, and community empowerment.

According to him, the NDC aims to serve as a credible opposition in Nasarawa State, noting that effective opposition politics had been lacking in the state in recent years.

“We must embark on aggressive awareness campaigns using both social and conventional media, as well as advocacy visits to communities to strengthen the party’s presence,” he said, urging supporters to join and build what he described as a broad-based political movement.

In a notable development, the 2023 governorship candidate of the NNPP in Nasarawa State, Alhaji Abdullahi Yakubu Madoya, alongside supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement, also joined the NDC during the event.

Madoya pledged to support the party’s expansion by helping establish structures across wards, local government areas, and zones in the state.
