Former ESUT Governing Council Chairman Ohaa meets Pope Francis at Vatican

Chinyeaka Ohaa, former Chairman of the Governing Council of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), has held a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican City following his recent voluntary resignation from the university’s governing body.

Ohaa undertook the visit as part of a personal pilgrimage, seeking spiritual reflection and blessings after concluding his leadership role at the institution.

He was accompanied by John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, whose presence underscored the significance of the visit within the Catholic community.

During the audience, moments of prayer and reflection were observed, and Ohaa received a formal blessing from the pontiff. The visit also marked a symbolic transition following his tenure at ESUT.

Speaking after the meeting, Ohaa described the visit as an opportunity for gratitude and spiritual guidance.

“Service to humanity is an extension of service to God. This visit is a moment of gratitude for the opportunity to have led ESUT and a chance to seek divine guidance for the chapters ahead,” he said.

Ohaa, a retired Federal Permanent Secretary, has held several administrative roles in public service. His tenure as chairman of the ESUT Governing Council focused on institutional stability and strengthening academic programmes at the university.

Observers say the visit reflects the continued engagement of Nigerian Catholic leaders and laity with the Holy See, as well as the role of faith in public leadership and service.
