Foden, Palmer to miss out on England World Cup squad

Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are set to miss out on England’s 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup when manager Thomas Tuchel names his final selection on Friday, according to a BBC report.
Harry Maguire is also expected to be omitted, with the Manchester United defender admitting he was devastated by the decision.
In a post on Instagram, Maguire said: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best.”
Despite helping Manchester United through an improved campaign, the 33-year-old centre-back is set to miss out on the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Manchester United team-mate Luke Shaw is also expected to be left out despite calls for his inclusion following an impressive season.
Shaw had been named in Tuchel’s 55-man provisional squad, but Newcastle defender Dan Burn and Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly are reportedly ahead of him in the pecking order.
Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins is expected to earn a place in the squad after helping Aston Villa win the Europa League on Wednesday.
Ivan Toney is also set for selection after an outstanding campaign with Al-Ahli, where he scored 32 goals in 32 league matches.
However, Morgan Gibbs-White is poised to miss out despite being among the Premier League’s top-scoring English players this season alongside Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with 14 goals each.
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori are also expected to be omitted.
But Arsenal winger Noni Madueke is likely to make the final squad alongside his Premier League-winning team-mates Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze.
The expected omissions of Maguire, Tomori and Colwill increase the likelihood of John Stones being included despite an injury-hit season with Manchester City.
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another player expected to miss out, while Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo is set to retain his place after returning to the squad for recent friendlies.
Jordan Henderson is also expected to keep his place after becoming a regular under Tuchel.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins on June 11 across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
