Experience still matters: A call for support for Okowa

In public leadership, experience is not merely measured by years in office; it is reflected in the wisdom acquired, the influence cultivated, and the tangible impact delivered to the people. In Delta State, few leaders exemplify these qualities as clearly as Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.

My reflections on his leadership are drawn not from distant observation but from firsthand experience. I had the privilege of working closely with him for several years, witnessing the calm discipline, thoughtful consultation, and sense of responsibility that characterized his approach to governance. His leadership has never been about noise or political theatrics; it has always been guided by deliberate decisions and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of ordinary people.

The great Nigerian thinker Chinua Achebe once observed that “the trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership.” This insight remains as relevant today as ever. Leaders who combine experience with integrity and an unwavering commitment to public service are invaluable to the nation. Dr. Okowa exemplifies this rare combination.

His public service journey has been long and distinguished. From his early career as a medical doctor, dedicated to saving lives, he transitioned into governance with the same spirit of service. He served as Secretary and later Chairman of his Local Government, experiences that strengthened his understanding of grassroots governance. Over the years, he held key positions in Delta State as Commissioner across several ministries, Secretary to the State Government, Senator representing Delta North, and ultimately Governor from 2015 to 2023.

As Governor, Dr. Okowa pursued the SMART Agenda, emphasizing strategic wealth creation, peace-building, agricultural reforms, and a transformed environment. Thousands of youths were empowered, infrastructure expanded, and new economic opportunities created across Delta State. Initiatives such as the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) and other skill development programs transformed lives, helping many young people move from unemployment to productivity.

Notably, during his tenure as Governor, Dr. Okowa facilitated the construction of roads and bridges across the state. Many were completed under his watch, while others were commendably brought to completion by his successor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. It is no exaggeration that he earned the moniker the “Road Master,” a testament to his hands-on approach to infrastructure and development.

Beyond his achievements, Dr. Okowa distinguished himself as a purposeful legislator in the National Assembly. As Senator representing Delta North, he sponsored and co-sponsored critical bills, including the National Health Bill, which was later signed into law as the National Health Act. Serving as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and as a member of several other committees, he demonstrated diligence, accountability, and a commitment to policies that directly benefited his constituents.

His senatorial record also reflected a people-first approach. He attracted numerous federal projects to Delta North, including boreholes for communities facing water scarcity, solar power installations, and oxygen-equipped ambulances for general hospitals across the nine local government areas. Many young people gained employment opportunities, while tertiary students received grants to support their education. His interventions promoted peace and cohesion across Anioma communities. Notably, his large-scale empowerment programme in 2012 was widely regarded as unprecedented and remains a benchmark for effective constituency service.

Yet, beyond projects and policies, what endures most in public memory is Dr. Okowa’s accessibility, humility, and ability to build consensus. True leadership is defined by influence and example. As John C. Maxwell rightly observed, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Dr. Okowa embodies this principle.

A remarkable demonstration of his humility and patriotism is his unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu. Even after running as a Vice-Presidential candidate, he humbly threw his weight behind the President’s vision for Nigeria-a selfless act that reflects the spirit of public service President John F. Kennedy famously urged when he said we should “ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country.” Today, Dr. Okowa serves as the South-South Coordinator of the Renew Hope Ambassadors, commendably promoting the gains of the Tinubu administration and championing the President’s re-election across the geopolitical zone.

Representation in the Senate requires more than occupying a seat; it demands experience, national influence, and the capacity to advocate effectively for the interests of one’s people. Delta North stands to benefit immensely from the return of a leader whose experience, networks, and patriotic commitment are already well established.

Beyond personal achievements, Dr. Okowa has consistently demonstrated loyalty and statesmanship by supporting his successor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. The Governor himself has publicly acknowledged Okowa’s integrity, noting that he has not applied pressure on the administration but has instead encouraged and supported policies that benefit Deltans. This collaboration has enabled the current government to deliver effective governance, ensuring continuity and stability.

Delta North deserves representation that carries weight, commands respect, and delivers results. The people of the district-including leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress-are discerning, and many believe they will rally behind a candidate with a proven record, both in the primaries and the general elections.

At moments like this, experience is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Dr Ifeanyi Okowa remains that experienced, patriotic, and visionary voice capable of giving Delta North the strong and effective representation it deserves.

When the time comes to choose between routine representation and proven leadership, the difference will be clear.
