Environmental Health Officers begin house-to-house sanitation inspection in Anambra

The Anambra State branch of the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN) has announced the reintroduction of house-to-house inspections across the state to improve sanitary conditions.

The association also inaugurated a seven-member Ethics and Disciplinary Committee to monitor members’ conduct, address grievances, and provide guidance on generating revenue for the state.

The President of the association in Anambra, Iyk Obasanya, disclosed the initiatives during a meeting in Awka, citing concerns about declining sanitation in some areas, particularly Onitsha. He directed Environmental Health Officers across all 21 local government areas to be proactive in their duties.

Obasanya explained that the inspections will cover residential buildings, businesses, and offices to ensure compliance with sanitation standards. “During the inspection, expired products being sold across the state will be impounded to protect public health,” he said.

He also noted plans to establish sanitation mobile courts to enforce compliance and support Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s efforts for a healthier and more livable state.

Obasanya urged directors and members to report any misconduct to the new Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. “We have a code of ethics for our profession, and members who violate it will face disciplinary action,” he added.

The committee chairman, Dr. Emma Obiano, stated that the committee will enforce a 23-point code of conduct, handle grievances among members, and review activities of private practitioners. The committee will also collaborate with government officials, including commissioners, to ensure smooth operations.

Dr. Obiano emphasized that the new framework marks the beginning of a more disciplined phase in the environmental health profession, with a focus on improving sanitation, protecting the profession, and contributing to state revenue.
