England stars forced to seek shelter as ‘deadly’ tornado rocks World Cup base

England’s first night at their World Cup training base in Kansas City was disrupted by severe weather, with players and staff forced to seek shelter after a tornado warning and dangerous thunderstorm alerts were issued across the area.

The Three Lions arrived at Swope Soccer Village in Missouri on Saturday after relocating from West Palm Beach, Florida, where they had been preparing for the tournament with friendly matches against New Zealand and Costa Rica.

Earlier in the day, Thomas Tuchel’s squad participated in a community training session at Victory Field under intense heat. However, conditions deteriorated rapidly later in the evening as powerful storms swept through the region.

Players and coaching staff were instructed to remain inside their hotel, The Inn at Meadowbrook in Prairie Village, after emergency alerts were issued by the National Weather Service warning residents of potentially life-threatening conditions.

“Critical. Imminent Threat Alert,” read the message sent to mobile phones.

“National Weather Service: SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING in effect for this area until 9:00 PM CDT for DESTRUCTIVE 80 mph winds.

“Take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter.

“For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.”

Although no tornado ultimately formed near England’s training base, the area experienced heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and strong winds.

The weather scare highlights a challenge that could affect several matches during the expanded 48-team World Cup, which now features 104 games. Under current United States storm safety protocols, outdoor sporting events must be delayed or suspended whenever lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of a venue.

In such situations, players and coaches are required to leave the field while spectators are directed to seek shelter. A 30-minute countdown is then activated, and if further lightning is detected during that period, the timer is reset. Play can only resume once the area has remained lightning-free for a full 30 minutes.

England already experienced weather-related disruption during their final warm-up match against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday, when kick-off was delayed by an hour due to thunderstorms. The downpour initially left large sections of the Inter&Co Stadium pitch waterlogged before drainage systems quickly restored playing conditions.

The squad’s preparations were also affected earlier in the week when a 6.1-magnitude earthquake off Cuba’s western coast sent tremors across parts of Florida.

Despite the turbulent start to their stay in Kansas City, England will continue to use Swope Soccer Village as their base throughout their World Cup campaign.
