If Prophet Ibrahim was prepared to fulfill Allah’s command to sacrifice his own son, then our political leaders must find the moral courage to fulfill their basic promises to the citizens of this country. Governance, at its peak, is an act of service. True leadership requires a profound spirit of selflessness and a genuine commitment to the common good—virtues that often seem in short supply within our political landscape. This year’s celebration arrives during a period of acute economic anxiety. Ongoing global inflationary pressures and regional supply chain disruptions have hit home hard, drastically driving up fuel and transportation costs. When coupled with the domestic shocks of the fuel subsidy removal and currency floatation reforms, the resulting economic headwinds have sent food and livestock prices soaring.

This convergence of global and local factors has rendered this one of the most expensive and financially stressful festive seasons in recent memory, pushing the traditional sacrificial ram out of reach for millions of middle-class and vulnerable households. In the light of these harsh realities, the true essence of Eid al-Adha serves as a vital reminder to actively uplift the vulnerable. We urge our leaders at all levels of governance not to overlook the quiet, enduring suffering of ordinary citizens. It is deeply disheartening that while millions of Nigerians face unprecedented daily hardships, public festivities are still frequently marked by official extravagance and waste rather than the fiscal discipline our economic situation demands.

Eid teaches the virtues of moderation and collective empathy. We call on all Nigerians to look past ethnic and sectarian divides to embrace the principles of peace, tolerance, and mutual support. Let this festive period be a time to examine our values, test our commitments, and ask what we are individually willing to contribute to national renewal. Also, the current waves of insecurity have put a dampener on all festivities, the Eid inclusive. Governments at all levels must summon the willpower to defeat all forms of terrorism and banditry, dismantle terror networks and make Nigeria safe again for all. May this Eid al-Adha bring the much-needed joy, relief, and blessings to all faithful. We wish Nigerian Muslims a safe, peaceful, and spiritually fulfilling celebration.
