Edo Govt seals poultry, piggery farms over environmental law violations

The Edo State Government said it has sealed four poultry farms and a piggery farm for violating the State Environmental Sanitation and Pollution Management Law.

DAILY POST reports that the State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, disclosed this at the monthly ministerial press briefing on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, in Benin City.

Adams, who described the sealing as a major achievement, noted that environmental violators had always taken advantage of the fact that the state lacked sufficient laws to regulate their activities.

He added that with the passage of the State Environmental Sanitation and Pollution Management Law in 2025, the law would now be effectively implemented across the state.

He also disclosed that 30 environmental defaulters have been prosecuted out of the 93 abatement and violation notices served on environmental offenders in the state.

The commissioner stated that the ministry has also conducted environmental audits in 230 facilities across Edo South.

Adams further disclosed that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the World Bank, will establish environmental laboratories in Edo State.

He said the laboratories would serve Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Ondo states.

He added that the proposed laboratories would strengthen environmental monitoring, pollution control and scientific testing in the South-South region.

“We have reached out to the Federal Ministry of Environment, which has pledged, with the support of the World Bank, to build three environmental laboratories.

“The environmental laboratories to be established in Benin City, Irrua in Edo Central, and Auchi in Edo North Senatorial District will serve Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Ondo states.

He explained that the Minister of Environment is expected to visit Benin within the next month to perform the groundbreaking for the project.

“That will be a very big boost because somebody coming from Ondo, Bayelsa or Delta to carry out environmental laboratory tests will be able to do so in Benin City, Irrua or Auchi,” he added.

He also said that the facilities would enhance scientific assessment of environmental pollution, improve regulatory compliance and strengthen environmental governance in the region.

“The state government has also established standard discharge limits for industries to regulate pollutants released into the environment and protect water bodies.

“We now have a mobile court stationed at the ministry every week to take care of habitual violators, while we continue to prioritise education and advocacy,” he stated.
