Drone strike near Dubai airport leaves 2 Ghanaians injured

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that two Ghanaian citizens were injured following a drone strike close to the Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In a statement, Sam Ablakwa, Ghana’s foreign affairs minister, said the incident occurred on Wednesday.

Earlier, the UAE Ministry of Defence announced that the country’s air defence systems were intercepting missiles and drones launched from Iran.

The UAE said its air defence systems had detected 262 ballistic missiles fired from Iran since the conflict began on February 28.

According to the UAE defence ministry, 241 of the missiles were successfully destroyed, while 19 landed in the sea and two struck the country’s territory.

Authorities also reported that at least one Nigerian was among the 122 people injured during the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles in the UAE.

Ablakwa said the Ghanaian ambassador to the UAE led officials from the embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate in Dubai to visit the injured citizens while the foreign ministry continues to coordinate emergency consular support.

“The Government of Ghana condemns the attack and reiterates calls for a cessation in hostilities,” the foreign minister said.

He added that Ghana is engaging with international partners to support a United Nations resolution aimed at reducing tensions.
