Ladoja’s absence sparks doubts over Friday’s Ibadan obaship coronation

Uncertainty continues to surround Friday’s planned coronation of three High Chiefs in Ibadan, as the return of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, remains unconfirmed.

The Oyo State Government has fixed the ceremony for Friday at Mapo Hall, where three prominent High Chiefs, Sharafadeen Ali, High Chief Kol Babalola, and High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin are to be elevated to the status of Obas.

However, concerns have emerged following the monarch’s absence from Ibadan.

According to a palace source, Oba Ladoja travelled to Lagos for an undisclosed engagement and has yet to return.

“Kabiyesi left Ibadan for Lagos. It is most likely that he will come back tomorrow to preside over the elevation ceremony of the affected High Chiefs,” the source said.

Despite the expectation, the source expressed uncertainty over whether the Olubadan would personally officiate at the ceremony.

“I cannot say whether Baba will preside over the ceremony or not. All that I know is that he is not in town at the moment,” the source added.

The development has fuelled speculation that the monarch may not attend the event, even as preparations continue.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Demola Ojo, confirmed that the state government is proceeding with the ceremony as scheduled.

“The elevation of the three High Chiefs to the status of Obas in Ibadanland will hold on Friday at Mapo Hall,” he stated.

Meanwhile, it could not be confirmed whether Senator Alli will also be present to receive the beaded crown.

The elevation of the senator has also drawn attention in political circles, with some analysts suggesting it may affect his chances of contesting the 2027 Oyo State governorship election under the All Progressives Congress.
