Defence Chief urges journalists to uphold truth and unity

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has called on journalists to prioritise truth and professionalism as essential tools for national unity and security, noting that Nigeria’s stability relies not only on military efforts but also on responsible information management.

Oluyede, represented at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, stated that the Armed Forces remain resolute in defending the country amid persistent security threats, expressing confidence that the nation will overcome its challenges.

“The Easter message of resurrection reflects hope and renewal. Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, yet we remain resilient. Trials are not permanent, and renewal is always possible when faith and unity prevail,” he said.

The defence chief reaffirmed the military’s commitment to combating terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other threats, highlighting the sacrifices of troops in restoring normalcy to affected communities.

He also emphasised the strategic role of the media in national security, urging journalists to prioritise accuracy and avoid reports that could incite fear or division. “In today’s information age, security operations are fought not only on the battlefield but also in the information domain. Accurate and responsible reporting strengthens national unity and builds public trust,” Oluyede said.

The Chief of Defence Staff further called on Nigerians to support security agencies through cooperation and timely information, while paying tribute to fallen soldiers and encouraging prayers for troops in operational theatres.

Speaking at the retreat, Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar highlighted the role of ethical journalism in nation-building, accountability, and democratic governance. He noted that responsible reporting promotes transparency, combats corruption, strengthens institutions, and gives voice to the vulnerable.

“A nation is not built only with infrastructure, but with trust, accountability, and an informed citizenry. Ethical journalism shines light into dark corners and holds leaders accountable,” the minister said.

Earlier, NUJ FCT Council Chairman Comrade Grace Ike urged journalists to draw inspiration from the Easter message by renewing their commitment to truth, integrity, and professional excellence. He acknowledged the pressures faced by media practitioners but encouraged them to rise above challenges.

“Operating in the Federal Capital Territory places a unique responsibility on us. Our words carry weight, our reports influence decisions, and our integrity strengthens democracy,” Ike said, stressing the need for unity within the union as a key factor in advancing journalism and protecting press freedom.

The retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security officials, and other stakeholders to reflect on faith, responsibility, and the media’s role in national development.
